Text The driving force for playing games usually is fun and entertainment. However, games also can have more serious applications: ð Games as a learning environment ö the participants learn certain concepts and know how to use them, ð Games as a research laboratory ö the main interest is to study the behaviour of the participants under manipulated conditions, ð Games as an environment for exploring alternative policies ö the participants co-create shared visions and develop possible action strategies.
Digital games as they exist today mainly aim at fun and entertain-ment, sometimes with ãedutainmentä as a side effect. The other types of games mentioned above, the ãseriousä games, most of the times are not computerised. This could offer some interesting opportunities for computer game developers.
The presentation deals with the game design process for ãseriousä games. It describes the strengths and weaknesses of using computers to run them and explores the opportunities for computer game developer.
