Abstract - Towards an Academic Game Theory
We will introduce a methodological approach for scientific descriptions of games in the First Person Shooter genre, without the intervention of hegemonic paradigms. Because of the growing popularity of the First Person Shooter and hence its cultural value, a specific method for thorough analysis is needed.
The objects we used for our research are corpuses containing on the one hand First Person Shooter games and on the other hand methodological approaches to computer game research. We have also studied the discourse in computer game journalism both to use its vocabulary and to learn from non-scientific game description methods. We have used Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault (2015 Inc, 2002 PC version) as a case study to exemplify and apply our research method. Because of the normative connotation of Konzackâs term layers, we shall talk about domains consisting of different elements.
Our method consists of three domains: ãWho makes what for whom?ä The ãWhoä domain has its starting point in who is making the game. The ãmakes Whatä domain is centered at all the game characteristics. The ãfor Whomä domain takes care of all social and cultural aspects, with the gamer at the core. Each domain consists of several elements and subelements. All three domains overlap and interact with each other.
