Abstract
Toward A Conceptual Framework of Computer Games Computer games manifest a diverse array of perspectives, skills and ideologies encompassing the worlds of art, design, computing and business. Despite attempts by a wide range of disciplines to colonise the field, games research remains in its infancy and a common conceptual framework and critical vocabulary remains to be forged. This paper presents a preliminary conceptual framework of computer games and attempts to distill a common vocabulary from the tangle of conflicting ideologies. The aim of this framework is to provide a common ground for the discussion of computer games and assist in creating a critical vocabulary for game design and development. The framework incorporates aspects of the literary and ergodic, sociological, software systems, and computing, counterbalanced by the practical experience of practitioners in the commercial game world.
