Grand Theft Auto: Vice City ö the eighties setting
Julia Fortuin Jacco Hupkens Eva Nieuwdorp Sanneke Swen
The game ÎGrand Theft Auto: Vice Cityâ is, unlike its predecessors, situated in the past: Miami in 1986, to be precise. This poster is about how the game setting represents the Î80s and how this affects the game's context. Besides analysing the game world itself for its representation of the 80âs, we will analyse the gameâs context from the three different perspectives outlined in the book ÎDigital Playâ by Stephen Kline et al.: political economy, cultural studies, and communications theory. We will analyse the game's marketing strategies, the way it is incorporated into the household, and the way the gamer experiences the game, to arrive at a full understanding of the role of the 80's setting in the game. By doing this we also hope to find a complete method for game research in general.
