What is the best way to analyse violence in computer games? Usually this is examined from a psychological or pedagogical view. This research uses a different point of view, it is about the role of violence in GTA Vice City, analysed from a ludologic and narratologic perspective.
It can be divided into four main parts:
The first part will be an examination about the role of violence seen from an classic ludologic perspective, as described by Roger Caillios in Man, Play and Games.
The second part is the examination of violence seen from a modern ludologic perspective as stated by Espen Aarseth in his article Playing Research: Methodological approaches to game analysis.
The third part deals with the role of violence seen from a classic narratological perspective as described by Aristotle in The Poetica. The last part deals with a modern narratological perspective on the role of violence, as stated by Janet Murray in Hamlet on the Holodeck.

The research of this game will be done by means of self-play, as by this the analyst will have a better understanding of the gameplay, rules and narrative. We expect that you can examine violence in GTA Vice City just as good with a narratological as with a ludologic perspective. This shows that you can analyse computer games from different point of views, that it is not necessary to develop a theory of analysing computer games. Games are such a rich cultural phenomenon, they can portray or simulate anything we can think about, therefore, no research field can be excluded. Details of this research will be presented at the games conference.
